COLOMBIA

121        CUNDINAMARCA. 1813-JF. Real. Indian head/grenada. KM -F1($220 F, $450 VF). Mint State or nearly, but many reverse scratches. Probably worth AU/VF. MB=$90                                                            ($200-400)

COSTA RICA/CENTRAL AMERICAN REPUBLIC

126        1845-CR. ¼-Real. KM23($300 XF –ha!)). Mountains/tree. Only year for this mint. Nicely toned UNC, but a mysterious patch of discolor in the center of the tree side.  I don’t believe the coin has been damaged, but this will severely depress the price. Note that the KM picture coin is HOLED. Also, the center of the tree side never shows well, being opposite the high-relief mountains. This lot is a bargain waiting to happen!

In 2013 Ponterio sold the Flores coin, Graded AU-53 but with a bad striking flaw. (“Struck through wire”). It realized $920. In 2011 Heritage sold the Dana Roberts example, NGC XF-45 (and ex-Paul Bosco, 1982!) for $1092.50.     I think this coin is superior to the cited examples. In 2014 Heritage auctioned one in Fine, HOLED, for $317.50.                     MB=$200 ($400-800)

127        1846-CR/JB ½-Real “CRESCA”. KM20a. On the tree side, there is a hairline scratch, EXTREMELY LIGHT, in the right field. Otherwise, this side is MS65. The mountains side is likely MS47. The strike is excellent, the coin is slightly prooflike and the toning, over brilliant fields, is multicolored and lovely.

Most coins of this type were overstruck (1849-57; KM 68) KM prices this WITH the cstp at $150 XF and $76.50 XF without (KM-20a). This is nonsense; this coin –in XF—was probably worth $300 or more 20-30 years ago. In this truly spectacular condition, all bets are off.

Heritage, April 2011 #23078 (The Dana Roberts coin), NGC AU-53, $488.75.      MB=$250              ($500-2000)

185        Hookneck 8-Reales, 1824-MoJM. KM-A376.2. Abt. UNC, arguably with trivial hairlines, but decent luster and a superior strike. All breast feathers are present, if not exactly boldly detailed.  MB= $500     ($2000-3000)

A true classic coin in the entire Mexican series, this lot will doubtless receive much attention. KM prices at $700 XF and $4000 UNC, but see S-B-Ponterio, Jan’y 2017 #3148, a comparable strike to this lot, but NGC63, $8812.50. Also Heritage, 4/26/19, #31565, NGC-AU55, another wonderfully struck example, $9000(!!) Valuing this coin is very dependent on the breast feathers and is probably somewhat subjective. It is recommended that you examine the coin personally, or commission a Mexico specialist to examine it for you.

Cf. S-B-Ponterio, Jan’y 2018 #24433, NGC MS61, noted as a bit weak in strike, as normal. Our coin  is bold, except for the portion of the wreath above the date.

214        1888. 2-Bolivares. Y23. Rare date (KM $750/2000 XF/UNC). Probable net grade = XF.MB=$100($250-500)

About UNC & lustrous, some fairly moderate obverse hairlines. The obverse was cleaned, I’m guessing about 50 years ago. Both sides have colorful iridescent peripheral toning. The reverse does not show cleaning. An assigned grade of aXF/AU would indicate how this coin could be valued.

215        1935-54. Nickel(4) silver(7) coins. Many Unc. MB=$30                                                                                          ($50-60)
