Bois Durci Medals and Plaques

The idea of mixing sawdust with ox blood to make hardened wood was the inspiration of the French poet Charles Franois Le Page in 1855. The mixture was ground into a powder, colored to simulate wood, steam-heated and then pressed into a heated steel mold. This early version of plastic was used for picture frames, desk furnishings and jewelry, but saw its widest use in the productions of highly polished plaques of famous individuals. Most of the bois durci plaques were produced by Alfred Latry in Paris. Here is a selection of such pieces in our extensive stock. Unless otherwise noted all are uniface, unsigned, and undated.
